Most people know the name Hanging Ditch. Few know the stories attached to it. History tells us executions never took place there, yet a forgotten newspaper article from 1934 tells a very different story — one involving murder, execution and a ghost so feared that businesses reportedly installed lighting to rob him of the shadows in which he roamed. From there we explore Manchester's forgotten Black Shuck legend. A huge black hound said to have terrorised the streets around Manchester Cathedral before folklore claims it was banished into the depths of the River Irwell itself. And finally, we uncover what may be Manchester's most unsettling mystery of all. In the 1920s, a strange illness known as Sleeping Sickness swept through the city. Healthy men and women suddenly became exhausted. Some went to sleep and never woke up. Others did... only to remain trapped inside their own bodies for years.
