A relaxing 2-day getaway in Hawai Onsen, Yurihama, Tottori Prefecture. This time, we stayed at Bokoro, a long-established ryokan famous for having Japan’s only “open-air bath floating on a lake.” We enjoyed the hot springs, local gourmet food, and sightseeing at a leisurely pace. The trip began with Tottori’s local specialty—beef-bone ramen—at the popular Kurayoshi restaurant Inoyoshi. The rich, aromatic broth immediately brought on the excitement of travel. Next, we visited the Former National Railway Kurayoshi Line Ruins, where the nostalgic atmosphere of the Showa era still lingers. Walking through bamboo groves along the quiet abandoned tracks was like stepping back in time. Our lodging was the renowned lakeside ryokan Bokoro. The open-air bath built over Lake Tōgō is stunning at both sunrise and sunset. With pure spring water flowing directly from the source—no heating, no added water, no circulation—you can enjoy a truly unique bathing experience. We also had fun making onsen-boiled eggs. For dinner, we headed to the popular onsen-town izakaya Warazake Hanjō. We enjoyed local dishes such as the famous “Onishijimi” butter-stir-fry and Daisen chicken karaage. The next morning began with sunrise over the lake and a breakfast buffet full of local flavors—Daisen Milk, fresh white squid, Akaten, and many more San’in specialties. To conclude the trip, we visited the Chinese-style garden Enchō-en.
