(18 volumes in total) The author is Nobuyuki Fukumoto. His most famous work is undoubtedly "Kaiji." "Ten" features many unique characters. The main character, Takashi Ama, Has a wild personality, is unattached to anything, and is always poor, but is always loved by those around him. Igawa Hiroyuki met this Ten. He's a realistic college student with a personality completely opposite to Ten's. And then there's the genius Akagi Shigeru. This incredibly popular character later became the subject of a spin-off manga, "Akagi." With his genius gambling talent and unique philosophical ideas, he embodies a unique way of life. The story depicts the fierce battles of many other fascinating characters, clashing with each other's unique personalities. Among these, the final chapters (volumes 16, 17, and 18) are particularly unique. Once known as a genius, Akagi suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Desiring to put an end to his past experiences before he loses himself, Akagi chooses to commit euthanasia. On the night of his euthanasia, he summons a total of eight people, including his former friends and rivals, under the pretext of a pre-funeral. The eight men don't want Akagi to die, so the story unfolds with each of them conversing one-on-one with him, trying to prevent his death. These conversations are peppered with philosophical reflections. I'd like to introduce some of them here. ~Too much success can make you feel cramped To Harada, who became the boss of a yakuza gang at a young age and has achieved great success, Akagi tells him, "You're not living a proper life." While he believes that "winning" is at the very least necessary in life, Akagi says that too much success can make you unable to move freely and actually makes you less free. Success doesn't allow for nakedness. It forces you to dress up. It's a miserable life, and he asks, "Can you really call yourself alive?" Harada realizes that he has been bound by the curse of success. Walking barefoot in the garden. Even something as simple as that is bound by common sense. This is one of my favorite episodes, so much so that I framed it and have it hanging on the wall. ~What it means to be normal Igawa Hiroyuki was troubled by his life. His life wasn't bad, but there was something unsatisfying about it, making him feel like he wasn't really living. Akagi saw through it and tried to counsel him. Hiroyuki suggested that it would be better to choose a "normal" life than to risk living a miserable life. Akagi responded by asserting that, objectively speaking, the words "normal" and "ordinary" are wrong. Normal and ordinary change with the times, and there is no such thing as a "right life." The concept of the right life has misled people from one era to the next. He declared that there was no need to conform to such things. "If it's a passionate third-rate life...that's fine!" This is a quote I want to pass on to future generations. ~About Death Isn't Akagi afraid of dying? In response to this question, Akagi logically analyzes the fear of death. He holds a somewhat nihilistic philosophy, saying that if he dies and becomes zero, then that's fine, but if he dies and remains conscious, then that's fine too, since it frees him from his troublesome body. Perhaps his genius stems from this view of life and death. ~About the Soul When asked whether a soul exists, Akagi answers, "I can't say for sure that there isn't one." The history of life's evolution to date is certainly one with a purpose, and perhaps something that carries that purpose can be called a soul. Akagi seems to believe that life has a direction. This is very similar to Schopenhauer's philosophy. Depending on how you read it, it can also be interpreted as "humans are representations of will." The author, Fukumoto, has undoubtedly read Schopenhauer. (I can assure you.) ~The Flow of Life and the Self Amazingly, the manga even features Richard Dawkins's "The Selfish Gene." Humans are ...
