Meanwhile, Jethro reads a troubling letter from the bank stating that Jed is overdrawn and all his money is gone. Unbeknownst to them, an out-of-work actor named Jake “J.D.” Clampett (King Donovan) and his wife Opal (Shirley Mitchell) have accidentally benefited from a bank paperwork mix-up, making them $36 million richer. Granny assumes the family’s financial trouble is due to reckless spending, but Jed, skeptical, calls the bank. When he learns that Drysdale is conveniently out of town, the family jumps to the conclusion that Drysdale has abandoned them and taken their fortune. Determined to get answers, they drive to the bank, only to be mistaken for vagrants and chased away by a Policeman (Robert Foulk). Meanwhile, Jake arrives at the bank to cash a $1,000 check, and though Opal has second thoughts about their sudden windfall, Jake is more than happy to enjoy his newfound wealth. Back at the mansion, Granny insists they should return to the hills, but Jed refuses to leave until he determines whether Drysdale truly betrayed them. Their paranoia escalates when a Paving Man (Dick Crockett) arrives to seal cracks in the driveway, explaining that Drysdale sent him. The family misinterprets his words, believing Jed is about to be tarred and feathered as punishment for their financial troubles. Still determined to settle their debts, Jed insists they remain until they can repay the overdrawn fees. Meanwhile, Jake is making lavish purchases, enjoying his mistaken fortune. Miss Jane eventually discovers the bank’s error, leading to Jake’s arrest. However, when Jed learns that Jake might be a distant cousin, he insists on having him freed. Seeing an opportunity, Jake embraces his supposed kinship and decides to stay at the mansion for a while, much to Opal’s dismay.
