In the United States, as new accusations of conflicts of interest target Donald Trump, the IRS has announced an unprecedented deal with the billionaire. In March, the US president sued his own administration, demanding $10 billion in damages from the IRS due to a leak to the press of his 2020 tax returns. The New York Times reported at the time that the real estate mogul had paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017, and none at all in ten of the previous fifteen years, due in particular to significant loss claims by his companies. The agreement reached this week permanently prohibits the prosecution of Donald Trump for tax fraud or unpaid taxes prior to May 18, 2026. This lifetime tax immunity also applies to his family and their businesses. The document also provides for the creation of a $1.8 billion compensation fund to compensate individuals who claim to have been "unfairly targeted" by previous administrations. In short, this could apply to the 1,600 rioters of January 6, pardoned by Donald Trump, who stormed the United States Capitol in 2021, believing that Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election was fraudulent. In Congress, this deal has outraged the opposition. "It's a 'get out of jail free' card he negotiated with himself. What kind of America is this?" fumed Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader. The controversy is growing in the press, and unease is spreading within the ranks of the presidential majority. Two police officers who defended the Capitol in 2021 have just filed a lawsuit. They want to overturn this decision, which political transparency groups are calling the most corrupt in US history. Meanwhile, Donald Trump showed reporters the construction site of his ultra-secure ballroom at the White House. This is a subject that has obsessed the Oval Office occupant for months. He has mentioned it on average one day out of three since the beginning of 2026, according to The Washington Post. But while this monumental and costly real estate project is a recurring theme in the president's speeches, as he wants "the most beautiful ballroom in the world," this obsession, highlighting the billionaire's disconnect from the concerns of the population, is increasingly worrying Republicans. Only 28% of citizens consider this construction necessary. A population whose purchasing power is increasingly impacted by soaring fuel prices, while international turmoil mounts. Iran, Canada, Cuba… Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has practiced diplomacy through threats and ultimatums. But his disdain for Canada has deterred tourism to the United States, and border cities are the first to suffer from the unprecedented tensions between the two neighboring countries. Negotiations on ending the war in Iran continue without success, and the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked. Washington has just announced that it is pausing its arms sales to Taiwan in order to “ensure it has sufficient ammunition” for the war against Iran. At the same time, the Trump administration is increasing pressure on the Cuban regime. Former Cuban President Raúl Castro has just been indicted in the United States, as the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) arrives in the Caribbean Sea.
