In 1962, from a modest facility in Midland, Texas, Jim Hall and business partner Hap Sharp founded Chaparral Cars. While European teams were still bolting wings to bodywork and calling it innovation, Hall was running real-time telemetry with GM's secret R&D team, building the first full composite monocoque chassis in racing history, and letting his driver control the rear wing angle mid-corner with a third pedal — a concept F1 would call DRS and mandate in 2010. Then came the Chaparral 2J. In 1970, Hall built a car with two giant rear fans driven by an independent snowmobile engine and flexible Lexan skirts that sealed the underbody against the track surface. The result was a rolling vacuum cleaner that generated massive downforce with zero drag penalty. It was 1.8 seconds per lap quicker than its rivals. Competitors complained. The SCCA panicked. The car was outlawed before it could fully dominate. That same sealed underbody concept now lives inside every diffuser, floor tunnel, and ground effect system in Formula 1.
