Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 25, he disclosed that he is currently defending about 17 defamation cases involving journalists and media organisations — a trend he says is becoming alarming. He described many of the cases as “nuisance suits” aimed at discouraging investigative journalism and limiting public scrutiny on issues of national interest. Samson Lardi warned that once such cases are filed, they often restrict journalists from continuing to report on the subject matter, creating what he described as a chilling effect on media freedom. He also renewed calls for the passage of a Contempt of Court Act to provide clearer legal guidelines on contempt proceedings and penalties. His remarks follow a recent High Court ruling that sentenced The Herald publisher Larry Dogbey to seven days in prison for contempt in a case linked to a reporting dispute involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.
