WYNYARD: Hartlepool Parish #9 of 9

WYNYARD – Vineyard Wynyard parish sits on the southern edge of the Hartlepool area, straddling the A689 between Hartlepool and Sedgefield, within historic County Durham. This is the newest parish in the area, having only separated from Elwick a few years ago This is a modern, leafy place, full of substantial houses, woodland belts and parkland, growing out of the old Wynyard estate that once formed the grounds of Wynyard Hall. The name Wynyard goes back to Old English and means “vineyard” It likely began as a description of land where vines were grown, or of people working such ground. That makes sense. Long before the present houses, this landscape was low-lying farmland and woodland in the Tees valley, outside the later Durham coalfield. Medieval references suggest fertile soils and well-wooded ground, with small farmsteads and a modest manor house rather than a large village, linked to nearby older settlements such as Grindon and Bishopton. Through the Middle Ages the manor passed through several hands They included Sir Hugh Capel, the Lisle and Langton families, and later the Claxtons. In the eighteenth century it moved from the Davison family to the Tempests of Old Durham, then by inheritance and marriage into the Vane-Tempest-Stewart line, the Marquesses of Londonderry. The defining landmark around here is Wynyard Hall, a grand nineteenth-century country house built for the Londonderry family and set in extensive parkland with a large lake. Once a political and social powerhouse, it hosted royalty and statesmen ---- However, the hall is not within Wynyard parish. Instead, the area this covers is all to the north of it. Thus, this is full of modern features like the new Wynyard Village – a set of streets threaded together by the green corridors of Wynyard Woods And so, over the years, despite people like the Londonderry family, including the 6th and 7th Marquesses, living here, they actually lived outside the area we need to cover. That’s a bit annoying, but we will make a few references to them in future episodes Local talk goes the same way. Stories from the wider Wynyard estate focus mainly on the famous eighteenth‑century “Wynyard ghost”, a tale linked to an officer named Wynyard and a spectral visitation, widely retold in Georgian Britain So Wynyard brings together an old vineyard name, a manorial story stretching from medieval gentry to the Londonderrys, and today’s garden village status. Its all anchored by Wynyard Hall, yet this place is much more modern in comparison.
