My honest review of Oathbound…

The Legendborn Cycle quickly became my new obsession and I was so excited to read Oathbound. Then…I read it…and I was a little disappointed. In this video I break down everything that I was confused about and what I felt made this book underwhelming compared to its predecessors. This is a hard video for me to make because I know the significance that this series has. It is not just a YA fantasy but a greater testament to the experience of black girls in predominantly white spaces. Culture and experience is so integral to this story and in this release ALONE we’ve seen how the stories of black girls are not prioritized. In so many bookstores across the country, Oathbound was pushed aside without any kind of display for a NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES. All this to say - I know what this book means to readers. And I don’t want to negate the positive impact that Legendborn and Tracy Deonn has had on the book community. My critiques come from a place of love. This is a series that I genuinely enjoy and I want to see get even bigger and better. So while I stand by my critiques, I know that I am not above criticism.
