Laminar Flow Through Circular Pipes | Fluid Mechanics | Mechanical/Civil Engineering
Why this Video is Important? The concept of laminar flow through circular pipes is of much importance for mechanical and civil engineers. Fluids are required to be transported over long distances and due to viscosity, frictional forces arise which gives rise to head loss. Head loss is a very important factor while deciding the pump requirements during installation. Real Life Applications: The pressure drop during flow through pipes is of critical importance while designing mechanical and civil flow networks. From a mechanical point of view, this concept is applied in industries and power-plants where fluids transportation is required and even in automobile fuel pumping systems. For Civil engineers, this concept finds application in city water supply systems and public sewage systems. Explanation: Due to viscosity, frictional forces arise between layers of the fluid during laminar flow through circular pipes. Due to frictional forces there exists a velocity gradient along the radial direction which in turn gives rise to shear stresses within the fluid. Due to frictional forces, there is a loss of pressure in forwarding direction of flow. If the required head is not provided to the fluid, there are chances that the flow through the pipe might come to a rest and our purpose of transporting the fluid from one point to another point will remain unfulfilled.
