JUNJO LAWES:THE UNSOLVED MURDER THAT SHOOK DANCEHALL

Junjo lawes was the undisputed king of dancehall music. Operating out of the volatile Waterhouse district in Kingston, Jamaica, his iconic Volcano Records label and sound system minted global superstars like Yellowman, Barrington Levy, and Cocoa Tea. Alongside the militant rhythms of the Roots Radics band, Junjo altered the DNA of modern Caribbean music forever. But behind the wall of bass and platinum records laid a perilous double life. As the line between the music industry and international narcotics networks blurred, Junjo found himself targeted by federal law enforcement, resulting in a 5-year prison sentence in the United States. By the time he was deported back to Jamaica in 1991, the digital reggae revolution had taken over. Seeking a fresh start, he relocated to London, but his past finally caught up with him. On June 14, 1999, in the Harlesden neighborhood of Northwest London, a targeted gangland hit ended his life at just 39 years old.
