Snow crab, the true flavor of the Uljin coast, with its chewy and savory flesh. It's a 72-hour journey for fishermen who venture out into the pitch-black sea to catch the first snow crab of the year. Every morning, they brave rough waves and bitter winds to pull their nets, and for the people who have protected Hupo Port. ■ Hopes for the New Year, Reaped with the First Snow Crab Net Hupo Port, Uljin, Gyeongbuk, is in the midst of snow crab season. Located at the southernmost tip of Uljin County, it is Korea's largest snow crab fishing port. On December 21st, the first snow crab auction day, the market stalls, lined with fresh snow crabs, were alive with life, and the eyes of the fishermen who had wrestled with the sea all night to retrieve their catch were filled with energy. Snow crab fishing is only permitted for about four months, from mid-December to April, following the spawning season, which is closed from late May to late November. December, when the first nets are drawn, marks the start of the year for the snow crab fishermen of Hupo Port, laying the foundation for their livelihood. This 72-hour series captures the eagerly awaited day, the first nets, and the vibrant atmosphere of Hupo Port, capturing the people raising their hopes for 2015. ■ As the Sea Allows, Today Without Greed At 3 a.m. in Hupo Port, countless fishing boats, including those catching red crabs and snow crabs, leave the harbor through the early morning darkness. The ever-changing winter seas are unyielding, even for the steadfast sailors who have weathered countless hardships on the waves. Living in harmony with nature, as the sea allows, these sailors are therefore not prone to reckless greed. Hwang Jin-bae, a fisherman of eight years, is gradually adapting to the order of the sea. Every morning, he boards a snow crab boat with his father. The fishing log he inherited from his father contains his father's life and expertise, which he wouldn't trade for ten acres of rice paddies. Nothing more, nothing less. Just as much as his father. With that same spirit, Jin-bae rides the waves. ■ Hupo Port, My Perfect Home In Hupo Port, countless people, beyond the sailors, make their livings on the sea. From the auctioneers who conduct auctions at the fisheries cooperative auction house, to the dozens of wholesalers, and the merchants who sell fish around the port, they are all the main characters of Hupo Port. Every morning, Park Haeng-seong purchases snow crabs at the Hupo Port auction house and sells them at a nearby street stall. Though her body is frozen in the windless stall, her heart is always racing.
