Santana do Cariri, Ceará Santana do Cariri is a municipality in the state of Ceará, Brazil. It is estimated that in 2021 its population reached 17,726 inhabitants according to the IBGE. It holds the title of "Ceará's Capital of Paleontology". Neighboring the municipalities of Altaneira, Araripe, and Farias Brito, Santana do Cariri is located 33 km northeast of Araripe, the largest city in the surrounding area. It is located 4 km from the municipality of Santana do Cariri (CE), on the road that leads to the top of the Chapada do Araripe, at about 750m altitude. The site can be reached by car, via a winding and difficult uphill road, or on foot, via a trail of about 400m in length, but quite steep. From up there, you can see the village of Cancão Velho (currently Vila do Pontal), located nearby, the municipality of Santana do Cariri (a little further away), and the entire expanse of the Cariri Valley. The view from up there is beautiful, and watching the sunset from there is a true privilege. Pontal has a steel cross, better known as the Great Cross, 20 meters high, weighing about 17 tons, which was inaugurated in 2001. The old wooden cross, which was replaced by the new steel one, remains in the same place where it always was. An old legend says that the old wooden cross was placed there at the beginning of the 19th century to ward off the devil who used to appear and terrify the residents of the surrounding area. It is also said that after the cross was placed there, the haunting disappeared. Thus, the wooden cross remains in its original location as a reminder of this legend. Besides the wayside crosses, which are the greatest symbols of faith and religiosity for the people of the region, Pontal da Santa Cruz also houses a small chapel.
