Terror in The Back Row
In regards to the theatres and cinemas of Edinburgh, there are many. In the seventeenth century, the Church of Scotland had traditionally taken a very negative view of the theatre, which promoted immorality. Enraged citizens burned down the first theatre in Glasgow as late as 1752 by a mob incited by hard-line ministers. It was, therefore, a sign of changing times when the Canongate Theatre, the first theatre in Edinburgh, was successfully opened in 1747 near what is now Playhouse Close without significant incident. Many cinemas and theatres have long since vanished from the streets of Edinburgh, but indeed, their legacy remains, many still recognizable beneath their faded façade. The visible ghost signs have long before covered up after years of change. Today we discover not just the ghost signs but the ghosts themselves.
