Bow: a longitudinal warp across the wide face of the board. Makes the board resemble a snow ski. Crook: a longitudinal warp across the narrow face (edge) of the board. Makes the board look like a curved sword. Cupping: warpage across the width of the board, making the adjacent edges turn upwards. Twist: warp along the board, making the ends rotate in opposite directions. WHY WOOD WARP OCCURS: Wood warp occurs due to sudden, uneven changes in the moisture content of the wood. As wood drops below it's "Fiber Saturation Level" (about 26% moisture content), it can begin to experience warpage. This is especially pronounced in "Flat Sawn" lumber, which is milled roughly parallel to the growth rings. "Quarter sawn" lumber, which is cut perpendicular to the rings, is more stable. HOW TO AVOID WOOD WARP: Try to prevent boards from drying out unevenly. If wood has a high moisture content still, or if DRY WOOD got damp again recently, don't let one side dry too much faster than the other side. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Also, store wood flat as often as possible. If wood is newly cut and still drying out, leave space between boards for air to flow through.
