Ivan Jablonka - La culture du féminicide
What if our greatest masterpieces had taught us to tolerate the unacceptable? Ivan Jablonka presents his book "The Culture of Femicide" published by Seuil. Interview with Sylvie Hazebroucq. Read the book: https://www.mollat.com/livres/3348066... In this interview, historian Ivan Jablonka analyzes the deep cultural and symbolic roots of violence against women. He argues that, far beyond judicial or police failures, there exists a "culture of femicide": a set of discourses, images, and narratives that shape our perceptions and trivialize, even justify, the murder of women. Tracing back to founding texts such as the Bible and Greco-Roman mythology, Ivan Jablonka shows how art and culture have, throughout the centuries, not only represented but also eroticized and romanticized these crimes. From 19th-century operas where the heroine systematically dies (Carmen, Tosca) to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma, through news stories and even certain magic tricks, the murder of a woman has become a narrative device and a mass-consumed spectacle. This analysis highlights a paradox: our society is horrified by real femicides, yet it continues to thrive on fictional stories that depict them. Ivan Jablonka questions this collective fascination, proposing possible explanations ranging from catharsis to a form of vigilance acquired by spectators to protect themselves from danger. He also explores how this culture has sometimes been enshrined in law, as with the Penal Code of 1810, which made the murder of an adulterous woman "excusable." By questioning the symmetrical notion of androcide (the murder of men), he highlights the specificities of femicide, particularly the sexualization and humiliation of the victim. Far from seeking to censor works, this discussion invites us to become aware of this legacy in order to invent a "counterculture," a way of creating and telling stories differently, with empathy and without complacency. 00:00 Introduction 00:10 What is the culture of femicide? 03:15 The Scope of the Investigation: A Western Phenomenon 06:00 Defining Femicide: A Recent Word for an Ancient Act 07:57 When Representation Becomes Justification 12:41 Opera and the Masterpieces That Kill Women 17:18 The Rise of Femicide as a Mass Spectacle 21:45 Why Are We Fascinated by These Stories? 25:42 A Culture and a "State of Mind" Enshrined in Law 33:07 What Feminist Research on the Subject? 39:00 Is There a Culture of androcide? 42:23 The Cynicism of Cinema: "Because It Works" 49:28 Rethinking Masculinities to Escape Violence Music note: © mollat Subtitles automatically generated in French by YouTube.
