After the express train locomotive has taken an InterCity from Frankfurt (Main) to Itzehoe and handed it over to a diesel locomotive there, it returns from Itzehoe to Hamburg to the Langenfelde storage yard. The journey begins in Elmshorn, where the lines from Flensburg, Kiel and Westerland meet. The line from Elmshorn to Hamburg is Schleswig-Holstein's busiest railway line, so we encounter one or two passenger trains on the way.
