【2年ぶりに3番出口が再開】改札までの連絡通路も完成 東京メトロ東西線 南砂町駅の大規模改良工事(第8回踏査) 2026年3月28日(土)
At Minami-Sunamachi Station, the tunnel south of Platform 2 (towards Nakano) is being expanded, and additional tracks and platforms are being added. On March 28th (Saturday), Exit 3 reopened, one of the east exits (2a, 2b, 3) that had been closed for improvement work. Furthermore, Shin-Suna Ayumi Park, near Exit 3 on the east side of the station where a cut-off body of the Eidan 5000 series train was once located, reopened after being used as a construction yard for a long time. While the Eidan 5000 series car body did not reappear, the silver circular monument that was there at the time was restored, and subway car-style playground equipment was installed. The completion date for this construction was initially scheduled for 2020, but was repeatedly revised to 2022, then 2027, and in October 2025, it was further delayed by four years to fiscal year 2031 (according to Koto Ward). [Outline of Minami-Sunamachi Station Improvement Project] When the station opened in 1969, it was anticipated that there would be few passengers because the area around the station consisted mainly of factories. Therefore, the station was constructed with a simple structure: one island platform and entrances at both ends. However, after the collapse of the bubble economy, the return of residents to the city center due to falling land prices progressed, leading to a series of large-scale apartment construction projects around the station. By 2009, the number of passengers had increased to approximately 1.7 times that of 10 years prior. During the morning rush hour, the narrow platform was overflowing with passengers, and platform monitors were stationed at each door of the heavily congested rear cars (cars 1 and 2), creating a system of "pushers" and "human platform doors." For this reason, in 2011, Tokyo Metro decided to add another platform on the south side, creating a 2-platform, 3-track system. This aims to prevent train delays during the morning rush hour by allowing trains bound for Nakano to depart and arrive at the same station, and to enable turnaround operations at this station in case of emergencies, thereby shortening the section of track that would otherwise be closed. Furthermore, plans include widening existing platforms, relocating the ticket gates currently located on the upper floors at both ends of the platforms to the center, and significantly expanding the concourse. In October 2022, due to the decrease in passenger numbers caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, revisions were announced, including the cancellation of the moving walkway installation and a reduction in the number of additional entrances. Construction began in the summer of 2013, initially scheduled for completion in fiscal year 2020. However, due to the soft ground resulting from the reclaimed canal (Suzaki River), tunnel subsidence and uplift occurred before and after the start of excavation, causing significant delays. Tokyo Metro's medium-term management plan announced in 2019 projected completion in fiscal year 2027, but in October 2025, Koto Ward indicated a further four-year delay to fiscal year 2031. Reasons for the delay include changes to construction schedules to ensure train operation safety and changes due to construction competition related to the early opening of Exit 3. [Significance of Reopening Exit 3] The reopening of Exit 3 is good news for residents on the east side of the station, where it is frequently used. Since May 2024, the waiting time at the pedestrian crossing (up to 1 minute 20 seconds) that occurred when crossing Maruhachi Street to reach Exit 5 on the west side (newly opened in May 2024) has been eliminated. Furthermore, the shorter distance walked above ground will make it more comfortable on rainy days and hot summer days. Exit 5 does not have an escalator, but Exit 3 does. Also, because Exit 5 faces Maruhachi Street directly, there is no taxi waiting area, but Exit 3 has a rotary and a taxi stand.
