DON'T FLASH THE BIOS UNTIL YOU CHECK THIS! HP EliteBook 840 G3 Black Screen Fix

The customer brought in an HP EliteBook 840 G3 with a complaint of a black screen. According to a previous technician, the problem was believed to be caused by a corrupted BIOS firmware, and the recommendation was to flash the BIOS. However, I decided to carry out a complete hardware diagnosis before attempting any firmware repair. During inspection, I noticed that the laptop powered on normally. The power LED came on, the fan spun, and all the power rails appeared normal, yet there was still no display. Since the motherboard was powering up correctly, I focused my attention on the display circuitry around the memory section instead of immediately flashing the BIOS. Further troubleshooting revealed a shorted capacitor located near the RAM slot. After confirming the fault, I carefully removed the defective capacitor. Immediately after removing it, the short circuit was cleared, and the laptop produced a normal display without requiring any BIOS programming. This confirmed that the BIOS firmware was never the cause of the problem. This repair serves as a reminder that not every black screen is caused by a corrupted BIOS. Proper diagnosis can save time, prevent unnecessary repairs, and identify the real fault before replacing components or reprogramming firmware.
