#BabriMasjid at thirty | In this episode of The Caravan Baatcheet, Seema Chishti, a writer and journalist, discusses why, after thirty years, the Babri Masjid’s demolition continues to dominate the Indian political psyche. Beginning mid morning, on 6 December 1992, over nearly six hours, thousands of karsevaks dramatically razed the three-domed, 464-year-old mosque to the soundtrack of fiery speeches by BJP and Vishva Hindu Parishad leaders. Chishti, who witnessed the fall of the Masjid in 1992 as a reporter, vividly recalls the atmosphere in Ayodhya that day. “At that time, none of us thought that the mosque would fall by evening,” she says. Chisti also discusses her latest story for The Caravan, in which she argues that an honest reckoning of the damage the act did to India is still pending. “They used a political event, a mobilisation exercise by a political party, and they were successful in pulling religion into it. This wasn’t organised by the Shankaracharya or other religious figures. This was a political event. This was a political mobilisation. Religion was quite far from this. But you brought religion and faith into it. And used this to differentiate between Hindus and others.” Chishti says that the Babri Masjid “had to be destroyed only because it was built by Muslims. And they are ‘outsiders.’ They are ‘foreign.’ And with that, certain basic things that were the foundation of independent India and for the republic of India, to a large extent you cracked it.” The Caravan Baatcheet is a Hindi talk show featuring engaging discussions on politics, culture and society.
