This Black Gay Reverend Is Challenging Norms Through His Book Queering the Black Church

At just 22, Rev. Brandon Thomas Crowley faced the daunting task of replacing a beloved pastor at Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts. Six years later, in 2015, Crowley faced an even greater challenge: revealing to his congregation that he was gay To his relief, most members of the historic Black church embraced him. His career has since flourished, culminating in the release of his book, “Queering the Black Church.” Crowley aims for it to guide congregations toward being more inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals. Raised in Georgia, Crowley was inspired by church leaders, despite hearing homophobic sermons. His great-grandmother assured him he was made in God's image, fostering his sense of self-worth. Crowley hid his sexuality through college and early ministry but eventually felt compelled to be authentic. In 2015, he came out to his congregation, receiving unexpected support. His church grew, attracting many LGBTQ+ members. This year, Crowley’s book addresses the history of homophobia in Black churches, advocating for inclusivity. As he continues his ministry and academic pursuits, Crowley hopes to further serve both queer and Black communities.
