For this experience, we joined local partners aboard a traditional xavelha boat, connecting the fireworks with Madeira´s maritime heritage, fishing traditions and coastal food culture. During the live stream, we also shared the story of São João de Deus, a traditional xavelha boat built in 1936. This type of boat is closely connected with Madeira´s fishing heritage, including black scabbardfish traditions, and São João de Deus later crossed from Madeira to Lisbon to represent the island at Expo 98. Eat & Walkabout creates small-group food, wine and cultural journeys across Madeira, Portugal and Spain, with a focus on local people, authentic stories, slow travel and culinary heritage.
