In today's video, we look AGAIN at the Hippopotamus Defense. I earned the USCF titles of CM and NM by playing nothing but the Hippopotamus Defense, and am very passionate about the chess opening option. There are so many different ways to approach the Hippo Defense in terms of playing style, and in this chess video, we look to cover some of the potential chess moves, chess ideas, chess strategy, chess theory, chess principles, chess tricks, and chess traps. Choosing a chess opening is very important, and much of it depends on your style of play. Are you an aggressive player? Take a look at stuff like the Danish Gambit and Sicilian Defense! Are you more positional? The Catalan Opening and Caro-Kann Defense are both good options. I would say the Hippo Defense combines positional and attacking play into one cohesive system. It is a combination of the Modern Defense, Owen's Defense, Pirc Defense, and King's Indian Defense with it's own added ideas. In order to improve at chess, you need to grow in your understanding of chess openings, chess middlegames, and chess endgames. Chess openings are important, but by playing the Hippo - all of your opponent's opening theory goes right out the window! It doesn't matter if they have studied stuff like the Sicilian Defense, French Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, Pirc Defense, French Defense, Nimzowitsch Defense, London System, Jobava London, King's Indian Defense, King's Indian Attack, King's Gambit, Vienna Game, Vienna Gambit, English Opening, Bird's Opening, etc. Why? Because by playing the Hippo Defense, all of this chess opening theory does not apply. The result is that you get a middlegame position you are more comfortable in. What I am presenting is a chess opening for black (and chess opening for white) that gets you out of the opening and into a comfortable middlegame chess position. This is HUGE.
