Paraíso da Europa, Porto Santo (Parte 3): A incrível biodiversidade da Ponta da Calheta

After a short tour of the island, we had lunch at a typical Porto Santo restaurant, where my wife, Agnieszka, tried grilled limpets for the first time, as well as the typical drink of this region, poncha. Poncha is a traditional and emblematic drink from Madeira, made from sugar cane spirit (also called Madeira rum), sugar and lemon juice, which is stirred with a poncha stick (also called mexelote or caralhinho). ). We ended the day at Ponta da Calheta, in front of the islet of Cal, where we dived to observe the underwater biodiversity of the island of Porto Santo, which we share here with you. Ponta da Calheta is the place where the 9km long sandy beach ends (or begins), which gives this island its fame and turns it into a summer paradise for the people of Madeira Island, who sometimes have a holiday home here. Ilhéu da Cal is located 400 m southwest of the island of Porto Santo, being the largest islet in Porto Santo, measuring just over 1 km². The islet of Cal houses an important testimony to the history and culture of Porto Santo, especially the lime extraction mines, from which its name comes.
