8 Months From Cairns Through the Savannah Way, East Arnhem Land, Kimberley & Ningaloo |Travel Recap
Eight months. Brisbane to cyclone evacuation. A whole lot of kilometres, and every one of them worth it! We left Brisbane in June 2025 right after the Brisbane caravan show with the caravan hooked up, a loose plan (including a booking for East Arnhem Land), and no real idea how much would happen before we made it back to the coast again. What followed was eight months of full-time travel at its best, and sometimes at its most testing. From Rainbow Beach where we caught up with mates, we started making our way north. Stanage Bay to relax, Finch Hatton for the MTB trails, waterfalls an platypus, a float down the Gregory River with mates, then 2 nights at Hells Gate Roadhouse before heading west along part of the Savannah Way, which at that time, it was the roughest road in Australia! A night at Daly Waters, where the pub is iconic and the people are half the fun. Another night at Bitter Springs for a float in the famous thermal spring. Then came East Arnhem Land, and that part of the trip is still hard to sum up properly. Banu Banu, the tropical island eco retreat off the Cobourg Peninsula. Bawaka Homeland. Beaches, fishing, swimming holes, culture, country, and places most Australians will never get to experience in their lifetime. It was one of those sections of travel that felt really special, and we knew it while we were there. From there, we made our way through Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles, with the Kimberley doing what the Kimberley does best. Then it was down to the Ningaloo Coast for the entire summer, choosing the quieter months and slower days, and even with the heat, wind & wild weather, we loved every bit of it. Eventually, we rolled into Shark Bay and Monkey Mia. And that’s where this stretch of the trip ended. Not exactly how we planned it, but that’s life on the road. Cyclone Mitchell had other ideas. This is full-time travel for us. Not a holiday. Not just the pretty bits. It’s the places, the people, the long days, the rough patches, the beautiful surprises, and all the bits in between.
