The May Grand Sumo Tournament went down to the wire and then some. For much of the tournament, Kirishima, who returned to Ozeki after winning his third title in March, led the championship race. But in the end, it was Komusubi Wakatakakage who rose to the occasion, defeating Kirishima in a dramatic playoff. With this victory, Wakatakakage ends a championship drought that had lasted more than four years.
