Email: [email protected] Did you know that in the 1901 British census, the Brahmin community of Uttarakhand was divided into three main categories? In 1901, Uttarakhand was part of the then-United Provinces of Agra and Awadh, where detailed records of the castes and occupations of Kumaon and Garhwal were recorded. According to this report, the first category consisted of plains or migrant Brahmins (such as Kanyakubj, Saryupari, and Gaud), who were associated with Vedic rituals and astrology. The second category consisted of local mountain Khas Brahmins, who played the role of guides and integrated into the local culture. But the most interesting category was the third category! The British gave a distinct identity to the priests who performed pujas at Shivpeeths, Siddhpeeths, and village deity temples as "Dev-Pujak," "Local Priests," or "Brahmins of Priestly Profession." Many historians believe that these priests were connected to the ancient Kirat, Nath, and folk traditions of the Himalayas. Although scholars differ on the Kirat or Nath origins, this document clearly demonstrates the unique religious diversity of Uttarakhand.
