Is It Illegal to be Naked in Your Own House in Singapore?
Singapore’s laws on nudity are stricter than many people think—and yes, you can be charged even if you’re half-naked in your own home, as long as someone can see you. The law wasn’t always this way. Before 1996, there was no specific anti-nudity law; people could only be charged under general “indecent behavior” rules. But after a viral incident involving a naked couple in—you guessed it—Yishun, Parliament decided to create a specific law to address public nudity. In 1996, a new provision—Section 27A of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act—was introduced. It criminalises appearing nude in a public place or in a private place exposed to public view. Nominated MP Walter Woon argued that only people who intentionally went nude should be charged, but his amendment was not accepted. So today, it doesn’t matter whether you meant to flash or not—if someone sees you in the nude from outside your house, you could still kena. But what exactly counts as “nude”? The law’s definition is broad: you don’t have to be completely naked. If you’re “clad in a manner that offends public decency or order,” you could still be charged. That means even being shirtless or walking around in your underwear could land you in hot water, depending on where you are and whether someone is offended enough to report you. And yes, there have been real cases of people being arrested or fined, some even for things like walking around shirtless in public. So, can you be jailed for being half-naked in public? Technically, yes—if your attire is deemed indecent. While the law isn’t super clear on what exactly crosses the line, it’s better not to take chances. Offenders may be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to three months. The best advice? Just wear proper clothes.
