On this Amazonian island, the police ride buffaloes on patrol
The residents of the Amazonian island of Marajó rely on unique mounts to navigate the swampy mangrove forests of their homeland: the Asian water buffalo, weighing in at half a ton, with proud, rounded horns and a generally calm temperament. According to legend, a ship sank off the island’s coast in 1920, and some of the buffalo on board made it to shore. They thrived to such an extent that today over half a million of these animals inhabit the island. They serve as livestock, domestic animals, and even work animals—local police notably use them as the world’s only mounted buffalo patrol. ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 – Intro ▷ 00:04 – Brazilian Police Water Buffaloes #wildlife #animals #brazil #police #nature #amazon #waterbuffalo #wildlifeplanet #island ------- Subscribe to wocomoWILDLIFE: https://goo.gl/L5puvQ Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo ------- This reportage followed the unusual police team and their captain, Roberto Absalão, as they worked with these massive riding animals. Now that some of the buffalo on the team have become too old for police duty, Captain Roberto Absalão has been tasked with finding new recruits. Traveling by boat, he heads to a fazenda, a local ranch, to select a young buffalo. He settles on a two-year-old buffalo named Rambo, giving him the chance for a police career rather than ending up, like most of his kind, as high-quality organic meat. Rambo will undergo about a month of training to learn the duties of a police buffalo. These include patrolling the capital's streets, the scenic sandy beaches, and the island's challenging mangrove swamps. Additionally, Rambo must learn to swim with a rider on his back—an essential skill, as the island is practically underwater for six months during the rainy season. Will the young buffalo be able to meet these demanding requirements?
