The film opens with Clay (Cameron Mitchell) escaping from prison and intent on getting revenge on the man who framed him. The man in question is Fox (George Riviere), who has appointed himself sheriff of Clay's hometown and abuses this power, the townspeople living in terror of his gang. They had initially paid Fox to protect them from the bandit Ortiz (played by the excellent Fernando Sancho), who himself terrorizes the town. Caught in the middle of these two conflicting sides is Clay's daughter, Nancy, who believes her father is dead and that Clay is merely a local hero. They are reunited, but caught in the crossfire between the two gangs, maliciously coordinated by Estella (Ethel Rojo), who is as cunning as she is beautiful (and she is beautiful!). Minnesota Clay is one of the first Spaghetti Westerns, directed by Sergio Corbucci before Django Unchained. While not as gripping or as dark as the films he made during the Spaghetti Western boom of 1966-1970, it's still a very enjoyable film, with the usual dose of injustice one has come to expect from his work. Mitchell, Sancho, and Rivière are captivating throughout, and Rojo could win any man's heart with his portrayal of Estella (it's no wonder her character is so adept at manipulating those around her). My only complaint concerns the English dubbing of the characters Nancy (dripping with oozing sweetness) and Andy (who sounds like Frank Spencer—my apologies to non-English-speaking readers who might not get the comparison). Once you get used to these minor overdub issues (which, honestly, doesn't take too long), you can really start to appreciate Minnesota Clay for what a very enjoyable film it is.
