SABfoil Sea Devil Hydrofoil | Stable with the Stab, Sketchy Without?

Jeff and Tucker from MACkite took a deep dive into a new and very unique foil from SABfoil—the Sea Devil. It has an out-there look, reminiscent of a B-2 bomber or an alien spacecraft, and it stands apart from most traditional foil designs thanks to its monowing structure. The Sea Devil mounts to SABfoil’s Kraken mast system using the M8 connection, but interestingly, it doesn’t use a standard fuselage. Instead, the wing itself serves as the fuselage, giving it a clean, integrated look. One of the key features here is that the foil can be ridden with or without a stabilizer, giving riders two very different experiences. With the stabilizer, Jeff found the Sea Devil super stable, easy to ride, and surprisingly traditional-feeling, even though it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. He was able to ride for 45 minutes without falling, doing tacks, jibes, and flagging out the wing, all while the foil behaved smoothly and predictably. Taking the stabilizer off, though, turned things up a notch. The foil became way more sensitive and required precise foot placement and constant attention. It felt faster, looser, and definitely more slippery through the water—more glide, more speed, and more pivot in the turns, but also way less forgiveness. Tucker noted that without the stab, it’s all about your balance and being in tune with the wave energy. The foil responds quickly to input but gives you zero backup if you’re not paying attention. Both Jeff and Tucker agreed the Sea Devil isn’t going to replace your everyday foil, but it’s an enjoyable ride for experienced foilers looking to experiment. Riding without the stabilizer is kind of like riding a unicycle—fun, tricky, and not for everyone. It’s not necessarily “two foils in one” the way it’s been hyped, but more like one foil with two very distinct personalities: one mellow and manageable, the other wild and untamed.
