On December 19, the Governing Council agreed to grant this recognition to the Princess of Asturias on the occasion of her coming of age, as it had done in 1986 with her father, His Majesty the King, in both cases due to their status as heirs to the throne. The Princess turned 18 on October 31, 2023, the date on which she also swore allegiance to the Constitution. Law 4/1986, of May 15, Regulating the Honors and Distinctions of the Principality, establishes in its first final provision that the princes and princesses of Asturias will receive "by right" the Medal of Asturias, the highest recognition awarded at the regional level.
