BSides Buffalo 2025: Sudo Confidence - Learning Cybersecurity the Hard Way & How AI Makes It Easier
I didn’t start my cybersecurity journey with a CS degree, coding experience, or a clear path forward. I came from a non-technical field, self-studied everything, and spent years quietly unsure if I truly belonged. I hesitated to participate in CTFs, avoided tasks that required scripting, and let imposter syndrome rule my career for too long. In this talk, I’ll share what I was most afraid of when I first entered cybersecurity - and how AI tools would have helped me overcome those fears if I were starting today. I’ll cover practical examples for learning to code, demystifying security tools, and building confidence with the help of AI as a study partner, brainstorming buddy, and judgement-free zone. New to the field or mentoring someone who is? This session shares real-world lessons and some modern tools to make the path smoother - no matter your background. About The Speaker Bonnie Martin Detection Researcher | CTF Enthusiast Bonnie Martin is a former detection researcher turned web business owner who’s passionate about CTFs, vulnerability research, and helping others get started in cybersecurity - especially those from nontraditional backgrounds.
