Buenos Aires: Violence in Paradise | Full Documentary
PASSPORT FOR CRIME: BUENOS AIRES / Benjamin Castaldi has never set foot in Buenos Aires, yet he has a very special connection with the Argentine capital. His father, actor Jean Pierre Castaldi, spent much of his childhood there. There, he learned Spanish, a love of wide open spaces, and the art of dodging blows. Because in the 1950s, violence was the norm, both in the schoolyard and on the streets. Benjamin Castaldi will dive into this megalopolis and discover that things haven't changed that much. With its refined cuisine, vibrant nightlife, and daily political protests, the capital of Argentina is unlike any other city in the world. It is a metropolis of European immigrants. As a result, the architecture is reminiscent of Paris, the restaurants of Rome, and the late hours of Madrid. This cultural mix gave birth to tango, the symbol of Buenos Aires along with soccer. In the city of “God Maradona,” attending a soccer match is a religious experience! However, this metropolis, which is very popular with tourists from all over the world, has its dark side. The severe economic crisis of 2001 plunged many Argentinians into poverty and urban delinquency. Social inequality and corruption have grown, accentuating the population's rejection of the government. Today, crime is skyrocketing: robberies, lynchings, burglaries, drug gang turf wars, and violent crimes are part of everyday life in Buenos Aires. So much so that the regional governor declared a state of emergency in the province on April 5. It is through these news stories and crimes that Benjamin Castaldi will attempt to uncover the society, customs, and traditions of Buenos Aires. Our host accompanies police officers on patrol in the city's rough neighborhoods. He discovers the new metropolitan police force, which is trying to regain ground lost to petty criminals who have harassed the population and tourists for years. He learns about the country's painful history and meets victims of the dictatorship who are still fighting injustice today. During a soccer match, Benjamin Castaldi accompanies the barras bravas of the Independiente club, Argentine soccer fans with a tendency toward hooliganism. Reporters from Cronica, a tabloid news channel dedicated to crime, take Benjamin Castaldi into the field to discover the latest news stories. Guided by a former junkie, ex-addict to Paco, a highly addictive and toxic drug that is wreaking havoc in Buenos Aires, Benjamin ventures into one of the many slums on the outskirts of the city to get to the heart of the drug trade. Padre Pépé, a red priest, officiates in the most remote and newest of Buenos Aires' slums. He welcomes Benjamin and explains how much he has suffered from drug addiction. This priest worked alongside the man who would become Pope Francis. To thwart criminals and delinquents, the middle classes organize themselves into militias: Benjamin takes part in one of their patrols. In this neighborhood neglected by the authorities, they take the place of police patrols. Finally, Benjamin discovers how, in this context, Argentina's ultra-rich try to protect themselves.
