They Sat Down in the Forest and Asked What They Really Were. Here Is What They Found

You have a sense - not an argument - that what you most fundamentally are is larger than the life you are managing. That underneath the performance, there is something that was present before it began and will be present when it ends. The Upanishads were written by people who had the same sense and sat down to investigate it directly. They called what they found Brahman. The ground of all being. The awareness that is not an object of awareness but the source of it. And they found something that changed everything. Tat tvam asi. That thou art. You, in your deepest nature, are not a small, bounded, threatened individual in a large, indifferent universe. You are the awareness in which the universe appears. This is either the most arrogant or the most humbling thing ever said. The Upanishads say it is the most humbling - because the self it is addressed to is not the personal self that the ego tends. It is the witness underneath that self. The sky in which the clouds of thought and emotion and circumstance appear. Unchanged. Untroubled. Already here. In this video we explore the philosophy of the Upanishads - Brahman and Atman, the practice of neti neti, Tat tvam asi, and what the forest teachers found when they turned the attention from objects toward the source. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Brahman and Atman: what they mean and why the claim they are identical is the most important philosophical statement in the tradition Neti neti: the practice of not-this that reveals the ground beneath every identity The sky and the clouds: the Upanishadic image that says more than any argument 4 practices: sitting with who is aware, noticing what has not changed, practicing neti neti with one identity, and acting from the ground "You are what your deep, driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny."
