The Story of Jesus Christ Birth and Early Years Jesus was born in Bethlehem to Mary, a virgin, and Joseph, fulfilling ancient prophecies. Angels announced His birth, and shepherds came to worship Him. Wise men from the East followed a star and brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. However, because King Herod sought to kill Jesus, his family fled to Egypt until Herod’s death, after which they returned to Nazareth. Childhood and Preparation Little is recorded of His childhood, except that, at the age of 12, He amazed the teachers in the Temple with His wisdom. He grew in stature and favor with God and man. At about 30 years old, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. The heavens opened and God declared him his beloved son. Soon after, he fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, resisting Satan’s temptations. Public ministry: Jesus began preaching the Kingdom of God, calling people to repentance and faith. He chose twelve disciples to follow him. He performed miracles, such as healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, calming storms, feeding thousands and raising the dead. Through parables such as the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, His teachings revealed God’s mercy and justice. However, religious leaders grew hostile, accusing Him of blasphemy. Despite His innocence, they plotted His death. One of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver. On the night before his death, Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples, establishing the tradition of using bread and wine to symbolize his body and blood. He prayed in Gethsemane, then was arrested. Trial and crucifixion: Jesus was tried before the Jewish leaders and then before the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Although Pilate found him innocent, he yielded to the crowd’s demand. Jesus was scourged, mocked and forced to carry his cross to Golgotha. There, he was crucified between two criminals. Darkness covered the land, and after hours of suffering, he cried out, 'It is finished,' and gave up his spirit. His body was laid in a tomb and sealed with a stone. On the third day, the women found the tomb empty. Angels declared that He had risen. Jesus appeared to his disciples and many others, proving that he was alive. His resurrection confirmed His victory over sin and death, offering eternal life to all who believe. After forty days, Jesus ascended into heaven, promising the gift of the Holy Spirit and assuring his followers that he would return.
