The voice of those who need to be heard is here! A situation of extreme vulnerability and institutional neglect is affecting the residents of the La Pastora parish, in western Caracas, following the earthquake of June 24th. Residents of the Sucre to San Nicolás sector reported that more than 20 colonial-era homes are severely damaged and that, during the early hours of Tuesday, a residence with more than 30 years of history completely collapsed. The community has been forced to organize nightly vigils because the structures creak and give way every 30 minutes, a situation exacerbated by recent rains that dampen and weaken the adobe and earthen walls of the area. Despite the fact that neighborhoods like Residencia Porvenir are located just three blocks from the Miraflores Presidential Palace, the affected families say they have not received any technical inspections or support from government agencies. The risk extends to school infrastructure: schools such as Divina Pastora, Madre Rafols, Nuestra Señora de la Coromoto, and Unidad Educativa Ribas have severe cracks in their cornices and facades. Former councilman Jesús Armas warned that building collapses are multiplying in La Pastora, Catia, and Petare, urging authorities to immediately deploy specialized experts to assess the habitability of the properties before another fatal tragedy occurs, like the one that claimed the life of a young girl in the area after an old facade collapsed.
