Rather than the previous well used and trusted 'standard' television format screen ratio of 4;3, modern slim-line sets produce a wider image based on the notion that our 'field of view' is generally lies more on a 'horizontal' plane. This format is also more compatible with modern computers and smart phones when used in the 'Landscape' position. Although the old system is outdated, a 4;3 ratio image can usually be displayed on a widescreen device with dark blank margins either side, alternatively the image can be stretched slightly to fill the screen.
