Satin finishes have often been limited to lower priced acoustic and electric guitars. It was generally seen as a cheaper way to manufacture and acoustic guitar which is the complete opposite of the orchestral string world. In the realm of cellos and violins, where resonance counts and acoustic instruments must fill an auditorium with sound, thinner satin finishes were the choice of high end instruments with gloss finishes only being found on cheap student models. Now, there is a trend in the higher end acoustic guitar market to embrace satin finishes for both economical reasons and musical ones. Martin has just released their D-28 Satin and D-18 Satin.
