Abraham Valdelomar y El Caballero Carmelo
Abraham Valdelomar (1888–1919), the "Count of Lemos," was one of the most dazzling figures in Peruvian literature. How did a man from Ica, of humble origins, come to reign over Lima at the beginning of the 20th century… and die at the age of 31? Born in Ica in 1888 and raised by the sea in Pisco, Valdelomar was a poet, short story writer, chronicler, caricaturist, and even a congressman. Author of "El Caballero Carmelo" (1913), the story almost everyone read in school, and the celebrated sonnet "Tristitia," he knew how to transform his childhood memories into literature of the highest quality. In 1916, he founded the magazine and the Colónida movement, which challenged the academicism of his time and gave voice to a new generation of writers. A dandy, provocateur, and self-taught man, he was also a friend and champion of a young César Vallejo. His famous quote about the Palais Concert cemented his legendary status. In November 1919, he died in Ayacucho, after a fall whose exact circumstances are still debated. He was only 31 years old, but his mark on Peruvian literature is indelible. 🔔 Subscribe for more Peruvian history: 📺 More videos on the channel: #HistoryOfPeru #AbrahamValdelomar #ElCaballeroCarmelo #PeruvianLiterature #Colonida
