(Métamorphose pour Piano)(Synthesized)

*YAMANOUCHI Tadashi (1935–2000)* was born in Hyōgo Prefecture in 1935. He graduated from the Department of Composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts and, beginning in 1966, served on the faculty of Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University, where he was eventually promoted to professor and remained for many years. His principal teacher of composition was Tomojirō Ikenouchi. In 1958, he gained national recognition by winning First Prize in both the orchestral and chamber music categories of the Japan Music Competition, establishing himself at an early age as one of the most promising composers of his generation. Yamanouchi’s musical language is modern in character, yet it remains firmly rooted in tonal foundations and therefore avoids the more radical tendencies of the postwar avant-garde. His works are generally distinguished by careful craftsmanship and structural sophistication. Their development is deliberate and meticulously controlled, and at times they reveal sonorities possessing a certain intellectual complexity and expressive ambiguity. He is occasionally confused with another composer bearing the same name, **Yamanouchi Tadashi**, a disciple of Akira Ifukube; however, the two are entirely different individuals. The present work is likewise a substantial composition for piano. Drawing upon an expanded tonal language reminiscent of French modernism, it unfolds a darkly colored musical landscape. At the same time, its architecture is carefully and thoughtfully constructed, resulting in a work that rewards sustained and attentive listening. It is regrettable that a composition of such high artistic quality has largely fallen into obscurity and remains little known today. Yamanouchi Tadashi passed away in 2000.
