Passing the "FAST" Stroke Test Almost Killed Me: The Danger of Medical Tunnel Vision

Passing the "FAST" Stroke Test Almost Killed Me: The Danger of Medical Tunnel Vision They told my wife I wasn’t having a stroke because I passed the standard "FAST" test. They were dead wrong—and that single mistake cost me my health, my mobility, and our family's normal life. In this video, I’m sharing my story. My name is Wayne known as burger, and I am a survivor of an ischemic rear optical stroke. Because my symptoms didn't fit the classic textbook definition, I was classed as "FAST negative." Despite my wife being a qualified Emergency Nurse Practitioner who explicitly told clinicians I was having a CVA (stroke), they refused to believe her. They were so hyper-focused on the traditional FAST acronym (Face, Arm, Speech, Time) that they missed the critical window for my diagnosis and treatment. ⏱️ The Cost of Medical Delay Because of the medical tunnel vision, time-critical care was thrown out the window. By the time they finally diagnosed me, we faced agonizing delays—including a critical 18-minute emergency transfer call time from Ashford Kent Hospital to Canterbury to find available stroke consultants. this took 2 1/2hours to happen To make matters worse, life-saving treatments like thrombolysis and thrombectomies were heavily restricted by the time of day and week. If I had received the same immediate thrombolysis treatment my cousin did when he had a stroke, my reality today would look entirely different. Instead, these delays have left me battling: Partial sight loss Severe neuropathy Mobility issues ...and a complete disruption to our family unit, changing life for my wife and children forever. 🧠 Why We NEED to Change the Protocol: Move to BE-FAST This video isn't just about my frustration; it’s a vital learning tool for clinicians, paramedics, and the public. We need to talk about BE-FAST (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time). Rear septal strokes present entirely differently from standard strokes. They don't always trigger face dropping, arm weakness, or slurred speech. Instead, they hit your Balance and your Eyes—especially in younger stroke survivors.
