Al Príncipe Felipe No Le Gustaba Comer Con La Reina. Este Es El Porqué
Prince Philip described himself as a foodie. Unlike his wife's more traditional tastes, Prince Philip loved garlic, adored curry, and was a spice enthusiast, sometimes cooking barbecue dinners for his family and staff. The Duke of Edinburgh was not only a skilled cook, but he also wasn't afraid to be a little particular about his food. For example, when Philip ate a meal prepared by Chef Regis Crépy: bacon, eggs, smoked salmon, kedgeree, croissants, and napolitanas. He later declared, "The French don't know how to make breakfast." Or when, while visiting the Scottish Women's Institute, the Prince joked, "British women can't cook." The Prince was so determined to do things his way that the Royal Butler, Charles Oliver, wrote in the book "Dinner at Buckingham Palace" that Philip used to travel with an electric skillet with a glass lid. He prepared his own meals, including bacon, smoked haddock, omelets, and sausages. Once, he even hunted, cleaned, and cooked a vulture all by himself. And perhaps because of Philip, he loved food so much that he might have preferred to dine alone. Royal chef Darren McGrady explained to Delish, "Prince Philip had a much broader palate than the Queen when it came to food. The Queen eats to live, while Prince Philip lived to eat." "Prince Philip not only loved to eat, but he also loved to cook." Of course, Queen Elizabeth's more moderate food preferences always prevailed when they dined together. "It was always about: the Queen is the one organizing the meal, so everything has to be the way she likes it. That's why I think Prince Philip sometimes enjoyed eating alone." Woman's Day journalist Elissa Sanci tried eating like Queen Elizabeth for a week. She described the Queen's diet as "painfully monotonous" and "bland," noting that the Queen prefers breakfast cereals, grilled chicken, steamed vegetables, and cucumber sandwiches. It's nothing like the diet of spicy curries that Prince Philip is said to have enjoyed. Then there's the fact that members of the royal family were told to avoid Philip's favorite foods to prevent his breath from smelling bad at public appearances. That means no garlic or onions, much to the indignation of many foodies. When Prince Philip stepped back from royal duties in 2017, he moved to the royal estate at Sandringham, Norfolk, England. Queen Elizabeth remained at Buckingham Palace. At Sandringham, the Prince's culinary preferences reigned supreme—at least until the Christmas holidays, when his wife joined him to celebrate. Another point of contention between the Queen and her husband? The drinks. Queen Elizabeth may be loyal to her gin, her sweet German wines, and her champagnes, but her husband, like her grandson, Prince William, preferred beer. During a dinner with the Prime Minister of Italy, Philip reportedly declined all the wines offered to him, saying, "Just bring me a beer. I don't care what kind, just bring me a beer!" It wasn't all tense when it came to the meals the Queen and her husband shared. As in any happy marriage, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip sometimes agreed with each other. Darren McGrady told Delish that the two had a weakness for fresh salmon. And on more than one occasion, the Duke of Edinburgh cooked a meal for him and his wife. Oliver wrote, "The Prince was also adept at preparing quick and light dinners, which he and the Queen often enjoyed after dismissing the servants for the evening." It's said that Philip prepared dishes for his wife such as scrambled eggs and smoked haddock, mushrooms sautéed in butter with bacon, and Scottish woodcock. We assume the prince added a bit more garlic and spices to his evening meals. Check out one of our latest videos here! Plus, more videos from The List about the royal family are coming soon.
