The unusual sound of the Saint-Chamond tank (French heavy tank from All Quiet on the Western Front)
The unusual noise is caused by its Crochat-Colardeau electric transmission. It has a 4-cylinder Panhard-Levassor petrol engine that drives an electric generator, which in turn powers two electric motors that drive the tracks. One advantage of this arrangement is that it can make perfect gradual turns.
