The operating system acts as an intermediary between the user and the computer hardware, providing an environment that allows users to develop and execute their applications easily. The operating system shares time scheduling tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software to allocate costs for processing time, mass storage, printing, and other resources. For hardware functions such as input, output, and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and computer hardware,[1][2] although application code is often executed directly by the hardware and often makes system calls to operating system functions or is interrupted by the operating system. Operating systems are found on a wide variety of computing devices – from mobile phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers. The dominant desktop operating system is Microsoft Windows, with a market share of approximately 76.45%. Apple Inc.'s macOS comes in second (17.72%), and Linux variants are ranked third (1.73%).[3] In the mobile sector (including smartphones and tablets), Android's market share reached 72% in 2020.[4] According to Q3 2016 data, Android's market share on smartphones is dominating with 87.5% with a growth rate of 10.3% per year, followed by Apple's iOS with 12.1% with a market share decreasing by 5.2% per year, while other operating systems only have 0.3 percent.[5] Linux distributions are dominating the server and supercomputer sectors.
