The species epithet "sinensis" means "Chinese". Chinese mitten crab is a famous Jiangnan delicacy. This kind of crab is considered by Chinese medicine to be a food with cold properties. Due to overfishing, the number of crab species in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River has declined, and the price of crabs has soared accordingly. Nowadays, the breeding industry is very prosperous in areas suitable for crab growth. Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu is the most famous origin of Chinese mitten crabs.
