"Back in the day," that is, 15 to 20 years ago, there was one weight class that was widespread and popular: the seven-and-a-half-tonner. It was large and powerful, for the time, but offered a near-perfect compromise between exterior dimensions, unladen weight, performance, and payload for many applications. There was the Vario from Mercedes, the G90 from MAN, and later the L2000; plus the lightweight Unimog series and a few other exotic models here and there. Bodybuilders offered a wide variety of cabs, with floor lengths between 3.8 and 4.2 meters. This segment has become increasingly deserted recently. This was due to rising demands, but also because the supply of base vehicles was becoming increasingly scarce: only the Fuso Canter and the Atego from Mercedes were recently considered as new vehicles, and prices for used vehicles skyrocketed accordingly.
