The fly line used in fly fishing is thicker than regular fishing lines. You use the weight of the fly line to cast the fly. Let me try casting it using a special line made of yarn so that it’s easier to see what’s going on. If you make big swings with the rod, the fly doesn’t go far since there is a lot of air resistance on the line. Now, let me swing the rod with the line stretched out behind me. BOY: It flew far! DENJIRO: If I swing the rod forward with the line behind me, the line accelerates when it gets pulled. When I stopped the rod in front of me, the line kept moving due to inertia. It gets curved and moves forward while making a small loop. Keeping this loop small results in less air resistance, and that’s how you’re able to cast the fly far. Using a loop to make something fly far away is similar to how a whip works. You extend the whip behind you and stop it in front. We can see that a loop is formed. If you look at the whip, you can see that it gets thinner as it gets to the tip. This makes it easier to form a loop. A fly line also becomes thinner as it gets to the tip.
