It is sealed with the grey direwolf of House Stark and written in the firm hand of Robb Stark, who is now starting to offer terms. This was enough for the Lord of Casterly Rock to call a meeting with his commanders, including Tyrion, who was set to depart for King’s Landing. As they are read out, the Western lords try not to blanch, but they can see the subtle shift in their liege lord's demeanor. His eyes flash dangerously as they are read out to everyone. Robb is willing to make peace with the Lannisters if the following conditions are met. His father's bones, sword, and those of his household are returned; an exchange is made for Arya and Sansa for Tywin’s nephews, Tion and Martyn, along with other captured nobles, and the North is allowed to remain neutral for the remainder of this conflict. And most of all, the crown must recognize Robb’s claim to the title of King in the North. Kevan: Madness. Does that boy seriously expect us to consider this insult as a genuine offer? Tywin: I assure you, he does not. This is an insult, something meant to rile me up and rage so that I might sacrifice my position. It will not work. Tyrion: And why shouldn’t we accept them? Forgive me, warfare was never my specialty, but isn’t doing the unexpected the best way to secure victory? Tywin: Falling upon your own sword is certainly unexpected, but you do not see great generals doing that. Why should I consider that now? Tyrion: Because there might be an opportunity here. It occurs to me, as I am sure it has to you, that Robb Stark is not our only foe. We happen to be contending with the Baratheon brothers. Renly has already mobilized a force far larger than anything we can muster. So it seems to me that making peace with the Starks will allow us to focus our efforts on Renly. As it happens, we are currently fighting the only king who isn’t interested in our throne. Tywin: And what you are suggesting would make us look weak, Tyrion. It is tantamount to a surrender to that boy. You think that would strengthen our position? None of the other kings would ever give such terms. Tyrion: Precisely. No other king would give such terms. What we have here is the best peace deal our young king could conceivably get in this war. If Stannis or Renly were to take King’s Landing, they would find themselves in the uncomfortable position of having to consider what they do with this. I think Robb Stark has proven himself smart enough to recognize this. Kevan: If they accept, they look weak as well, but if they refuse, they make an enemy of Robb Stark and will have to fight him. This could give us options for our strategies. Tywin: It makes us look weak. Tyrion: You should know, a wise sage from the east once said. “If strong, give the illusion of weakness and if weak, give the illusion of strength”. I believe that we should consider doing both. Tywin: And what of the North? If we follow your plan and somehow manage to win, it also leaves us without the North and the Riverlands. Or are you so content with losing half the lands of the realm? Tyrion: It is poor land. The North was never rich to begin with, and the Riverlands were devastated by our little incursion. I am sure its loss will sting, but what are the Starks' words? Tywin: Winter is Coming. Tyrion: Winter is Coming. That is not a battle cry like other houses'; it is a warning. The days grow shorter and the nights colder. Winter is coming, and when it does, Robb Stark’s new kingdom suddenly finds itself alone and without land to feed itself. Their king can win battles, but can he defeat the snow?
