How Alexander Built a Road Through the Sea to Destroy Tyre

In 332 BC, Alexander the Great faced a city that seemed impossible to conquer. Tyre sat on an island nearly half a mile from the mainland, protected by towering walls, a powerful navy, and centuries of successful resistance against foreign invaders. Even mighty empires had failed to take it. Most commanders would have moved on. Alexander decided to build a road through the sea. For seven months, his army dumped stone, timber, and rubble into the Mediterranean while fighting off naval attacks, fires, and constant resistance from the defenders. What began as an impossible idea became one of the most extraordinary siege operations in military history. How did Alexander reach a city that had no land connection? And how did a man-made road change the fate of one of the strongest fortresses in the ancient world? This is the story of the Siege of Tyre — and the road Alexander built through the sea.
